The Wide Open Design Heavy-Duty Suspension Limit Strap is built to control suspension droop and protect shocks, CV axles, driveshafts, brake lines, and other suspension components from over-extension. Designed for high-speed off-road use, hard landings, extreme articulation, and heavy axle assemblies, this quad-wrapped limit strap provides a durable mechanical stop before the suspension reaches the end of its safe travel.
Each strap is constructed from four layers of high-strength sewn webbing and finished with 4130 chromoly mounting tabs. Available in 1" increments from 6" through 44", WOD limit straps can be matched closely to custom suspension geometry for rock crawlers, Ultra4 cars, prerunners, trail rigs, buggies, and other severe-duty off-road builds.

How to Measure for the Correct Length:
- Install or tack-weld the upper and lower mounting tabs so they are aligned with the direction of strap load.
- Cycle the suspension to the intended maximum droop position.
- Measure from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other mounting hole.
- Calculate the expected strap stretch.
- Subtract the calculated stretch from the measured eye-to-eye distance.
- Select the closest available strap length without allowing the shock, CV axle, driveshaft, brake hose, or other component to become the droop stop.
Stretch Calculation Example:
- Measured distance: 18.50" center-to-center
- Approximate stretch allowance: 1" per 12" of strap length
- Estimated stretch: 18.50" × 0.083 = approximately 1.54"
- Calculated strap length: 18.50" − 1.54" = approximately 16.96"
- Recommended nominal length: 17"
Installation Notes:
- The strap ends and chassis mounting tabs must align with the direction of pull.
- Do not twist the strap or force it to operate against the side of the mounting tabs.
- Verify that the strap becomes loaded before the shock reaches full extension.
- Check CV-joint, driveshaft, brake-line, sway-bar, and steering-linkage angles at full droop.
- Cycle the suspension through its complete range before final welding.
- Use compatible 1/2" mounting hardware with adequate strength and proper retention.
- Inspect straps regularly for cuts, fraying, melted fibers, damaged stitching, elongated holes, corrosion, or bent mounting tabs.
- Replace any strap showing visible damage or significant permanent stretch.
Important: Misaligned mounting tabs can side-load the chromoly ends, wear the webbing, and cause premature strap failure.

What does a suspension limit strap do?
A limit strap controls maximum suspension droop before the shock, CV axle, driveshaft, brake hose, steering component, or other part reaches its mechanical limit. This reduces impact loading and helps protect expensive suspension and drivetrain components.
Why should the shock not act as the suspension droop stop?
Allowing the shock to repeatedly reach full extension can place severe impact loads on the piston, shaft, rod guide, seals, bearings, and mounting hardware. A properly sized limit strap absorbs and controls that load before the shock tops out.
Why are limit straps important on CV-equipped vehicles?
Independent suspension systems can force CV joints beyond their safe operating angle at full droop. A correctly positioned limit strap restricts travel before the CV binds, overheats, damages the cage, or pulls apart.
Why do limit straps need a stretch allowance?
Limit straps elongate under load. If a strap is ordered at the exact static eye-to-eye measurement, the suspension may droop farther than intended once the strap stretches. Subtracting the expected stretch helps the loaded strap stop the suspension at the desired position.
How are WOD limit straps measured?
Strap length is measured from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the opposite mounting hole.
Should the mounting tabs be aligned?
Yes. Both mounting tabs should align with the direction the strap pulls. Side loading or twisting can create uneven webbing wear, bend the end tabs, and reduce service life.
Can one limit strap be used per axle?
Suspension design determines the required number and placement. Many solid-axle systems use one strap near each side of the axle to control droop evenly, while some center-mounted or specialized suspension designs use a different arrangement. The complete system should be engineered so droop is controlled without introducing axle bind or excessive side load.
How often should limit straps be inspected?
Inspect the straps during routine suspension service and after hard impacts, jumps, rollovers, or competition use. Look for frayed fibers, damaged stitching, cuts, heat damage, permanent stretching, bent tabs, loose bolts, and cracked mounting welds.
When should a limit strap be replaced?
Replace the strap when the webbing is cut or frayed, stitching is damaged, the end tabs are bent, the mounting holes are elongated, or the strap has stretched enough to change the suspension's maximum droop position.
