The Art Carr - Winters SideWinder Gated Shifter for TH400 transmissions uses a stepped steel gate and mechanical guard bar to provide positive, repeatable gear selection without relying on spring-loaded shift mechanisms. The physical gate controls shifter movement and creates a deliberate path into Reverse, making the SideWinder a strong choice for rock crawlers, rock bouncers, race vehicles, and custom off-road builds where missed shifts are not an option.

Each TH400 SideWinder arrives fully assembled in its console with a 5 ft. shift cable and linkage hardware. Multiple gate configurations are available to match standard or reverse-pattern valve bodies, including Rock Crawl gate options for drivers who want quicker movement between forward gears during technical off-road use.

Includes:

  • (1) Fully Assembled Winters SideWinder TH400 Gated Shifter
  • (1) 5 ft. Shifter Cable
  • Shift Linkage Hardware
  • Integrated Steel Safety Guard

Transmission Application
GM TH400 / Turbo 400 Automatic or Manual Valve Body Applications Using the Correct Gate Pattern

Fitment Notes:

  • Select the gate configuration that matches your TH400 valve body and desired shift pattern.
  • Standard Gate is intended for standard-pattern transmission configurations.
  • Reverse Gate is intended for reverse-pattern manual valve bodies.
  • Rock Crawl gate options allow more direct movement between forward gears for technical off-road driving.
  • Includes a 5 ft. cable; custom chassis layouts may require a different cable length depending on shifter location and routing.
  • For custom consoles and tube chassis installations, pair with the Wide Open Design Shifter Mounting Brackets for a rigid mounting point.
  • Verify valve body shift pattern before ordering. Gate selection must match the transmission configuration.

FAQ

Which Winters gate do I need for my TH400?

The gate must match the transmission's valve body and shift pattern. Standard-pattern transmissions use a Standard Gate, while a reverse manual valve body requires a Reverse Gate. Rock Crawl versions are available for builders who want quicker movement between the forward gears.

What is the difference between a Rock Crawl Gate and a standard Winters gate?

The Rock Crawl Gate is intended to make movement between forward gears faster and more direct during technical off-road driving. A conventional gate uses more defined individual gear positions, while the Rock Crawl configuration is geared toward drivers who frequently change forward gears while crawling or rock bouncing.

Can I use a Winters SideWinder with a reverse manual valve body TH400?

Yes, but the shifter must be ordered with the correct Reverse or Reverse Rock Crawl gate. The gate pattern and transmission valve body must match for the shifter positions to correspond correctly with the transmission.

Does the Winters TH400 shifter include a cable?

Yes. This shifter includes a 5 ft. cable and linkage hardware. Five feet works for many front-engine applications, but custom tube chassis, unusual shifter locations, or specialized cable routing may require a different cable length.

How should the TH400 shifter cable be adjusted?

Set both the transmission and shifter in Neutral before making the final cable adjustment. The cable should allow the transmission lever to fully engage each position without binding or placing constant load on the shifter or transmission linkage.
