The Yukon GM 14-Bolt 10.5" Thick Ring & Pinion Gear Set is engineered for GM full-size truck rear axles equipped with 4.11 and numerically lower differential carriers. Designed specifically with a thicker ring gear casting, this set allows builders to install deeper performance gear ratios—including 4.56, 4.88, 5.13, and 5.38—directly onto a factory 3.21, 3.42, 3.73, or 4.10 carrier without the added expense or downtime of purchasing a new differential carrier.

Manufactured by Yukon Gear & Axle, these 30-spline gears are built to withstand the heavy shock loads and torque demands of rock crawlers, mud trucks, overland rigs, and heavy-duty tow vehicles running larger tire combinations. Re-gearing your 14-bolt restores lost mechanical advantage, brings engine RPM back into its optimal power band, and drastically reduces transmission fluid temperatures when pushing 35-inch or larger tires on the trail or highway.

Includes:

  • (1) GM 14-Bolt 10.5" Thick Ring Gear
  • (1) 30-Spline Pinion Gear

Note: Master overhaul bearing and installation kits are sold separately. Always verify your existing differential carrier ratio split before ordering.

Fitment Notes

  • Intended strictly for GM 10.5" 14-Bolt axles originally equipped with a 4.11 or numerically lower (3.21, 3.42, 3.73, 4.10) differential carrier.
  • Do not order a "Thick" ring gear if your axle already has a 4.56 or numerically higher carrier installed; standard ring gears are required for 4.56+ carriers.
  • Compatible with factory Gov-Lock differential units provided the casting is a 4.11-and-down carrier series.
  • Proper installation requires verifying gear backlash, pinion depth, and bearing preload. A GM 14-Bolt Master Overhaul Kit is strongly recommended for a complete rebuild.

FAQ

1. Why do I need a "Thick" ring gear for my GM 14-Bolt?

Factory GM 14-bolt axles use two different differential carrier offsets: one for 4.11 and numerically lower gears (3.21–4.10), and another for 4.56 and numerically higher gears. A "Thick" ring gear adds extra material to the ring gear mounting face, allowing you to install deeper gear ratios (4.56 through 5.38) onto your existing 4.11-and-down carrier without buying a new differential carrier.

2. What gear ratio should I select for my tire size?

For GM 14-bolt builds used in trail riding, overlanding, or towing, recommended ratios based on tire diameter are:

Gear Ratio Recommended Tire Diameter
4.56 35" – 37" Tires
4.88 37" – 40" Tires
5.13 40" – 42" Tires
5.38 42"+ Dedicated Off-Road / Crawling

3. Will these gears work with a factory GM Gov-Lock differential?

Yes. This thick gear set is compatible with a factory Gov-Lock differential unit, provided that your specific Gov-Lock is a 4.11 and numerically lower carrier casting.

4. Why is re-gearing necessary after upgrading to larger tires?

Installing taller tires drops your vehicle's effective final drive ratio, which causes engine lugging, sluggish acceleration, poor towing capability, and excessive heat buildup in the automatic transmission. Re-gearing restores proper torque multiplication, allowing your engine and transmission to operate in their intended efficiency range.

5. Is an installation or master overhaul kit included with this gear set?

No. This listing includes only the matched ring and pinion gear set. We strongly recommend using a fresh GM 14-Bolt Master Overhaul Kit during installation to ensure new carrier bearings, pinion bearings, seals, shims, and ring gear bolts are used for a reliable setup.
