One of the biggest mistakes we see is builders choosing shocks because "my buddy runs them and loves them."

That's great—but his suspension was built around his vehicle, not yours.

Two rigs might both be running 40-inch tires, but a lightweight rock crawler, a trail Jeep, and a fully loaded overland rig all place completely different demands on their suspension.

The right shock depends on much more than brand name. It should match your:

  • Vehicle weight and weight distribution
  • Wheelbase and suspension geometry
  • Tire size and available wheel travel
  • Driving style—rock crawling, trail riding, overlanding, desert running, or racing

For example, your friend's 4,200-pound trail buggy may ride great on 2.5 remote reservoir coilovers. That doesn't mean the same setup will work on your 5,800-pound overland Jeep loaded with armor, camping gear, and 40-inch tires. The suspension is controlling an entirely different vehicle, so the results can be completely different.


Mistake #2: Assuming Bigger Shocks Are Always Better

It's easy to assume a 3.0-inch shock must be better than a 2.5, and a 2.5 must be better than a 2.0. In reality, bigger isn't always better—it just means the shock was designed for a different job.

For many trail rigs, Jeeps, and lightweight buggies, a 2.0 coilover can provide excellent ride quality and all the performance needed for crawling and recreational trail use. On the other hand, a heavy Ultra4 car or high-speed desert truck may benefit from the added oil capacity and cooling of a 2.5 or 3.0 shock.


Mistake #3: Focusing Only on the Shock

A great suspension system is exactly that—a system.

Even the best shocks can't make up for the wrong springs, poor mounting geometry, or missing supporting components. Every part of your suspension works together to control the vehicle, absorb impacts, and protect expensive components from damage.
