The Crane Axle Lightweight Wilwood 8 x 6.5" Rear Brake Kit - 4-Piston is a lightweight, high-performance rear disc brake package designed for custom axle assemblies in rock crawlers, rock bouncers, Ultra4 race cars, prerunners, trail rigs, and other performance off-road builds. Built around Wilwood Forged Dynalite 4-piston calipers and 13.5" vented rotors, this system delivers strong, predictable rear braking without the weight of a traditional heavy-duty brake package.

Machined 6061 aluminum Crane Axle brake hats, Wilwood vented rotors, and 4-piston calipers reduce rotating and unsprung weight while providing the braking leverage and heat capacity needed for large tires and demanding off-road use. Weld-on 3/8" steel caliper brackets allow the system to be integrated into compatible custom rear axle assemblies, while the brake hats support 8 on 6.5" and 8 on 170mm wheel bolt patterns.

Includes:

  • (2) Weld-On Caliper Brackets

Fitment

Designed For:

  • Compatible 8-lug rear wheel hubs
  • Custom rear axle assemblies
  • Performance off-road rear brake conversions
  • 8 on 6.5" wheel bolt patterns
  • 8 on 170mm wheel bolt patterns

Fitment Notes:

  • Designed for compatible custom rear axle configurations.
  • Requires weld-on caliper bracket installation.
  • Caliper brackets must be positioned to properly center the calipers over the rotors before final welding.
  • Requires 17" or larger wheels for rotor and caliper clearance.
  • Actual wheel clearance varies based on wheel design and backspacing.
  • Verify axle housing, hub, brake hat, rotor, and wheel compatibility before installation.
  • Brake hoses must be routed and secured away from suspension components, tires, exhaust, and other moving parts.
  • Verify master cylinder sizing and front-to-rear brake balance as part of the complete braking system.

FAQ

What axle is this rear brake kit designed for?

This is a custom rear axle brake package rather than a vehicle-specific brake conversion. It is designed around compatible 8-lug rear wheel hubs and weld-on caliper brackets, allowing builders to integrate the brake system into compatible custom rear axle assemblies.

What bolt patterns does this brake kit support?

The Crane Axle brake hats are designed to support both 8 on 6.5" and 8 on 170mm wheel bolt patterns. The complete hub, brake hat, rotor, and wheel combination should be verified before final assembly.

Why use a 4-piston Wilwood caliper on the rear axle?

The Wilwood Forged Dynalite 4-piston caliper provides consistent clamping force and predictable brake modulation in a compact, lightweight package. This makes it well suited to performance off-road builds where braking control and reduced weight are both important.

What size wheels are required with the 13.5" rotors?

A 17" or larger wheel is required for rotor and caliper clearance. Actual clearance varies by wheel design and backspacing, so wheel-to-caliper clearance should always be verified before final assembly.

Does this rear brake kit require welding?

Yes. The included 3/8" steel caliper brackets are weld-on components. The brackets must be properly positioned to center the calipers over the rotors before final welding.

Do I need to consider brake bias when installing this kit?

Yes. Rear caliper piston area and rotor diameter affect overall front-to-rear brake balance. Master cylinder sizing, front brake configuration, vehicle weight distribution, tire size, and intended use should all be considered when setting up the complete braking system.
