The Sanderson Small Block Chevy Block Hugger Headers are designed for custom builds where frame rails, steering components, suspension, and engine bay space leave little room for a conventional exhaust system. Their compact block-hugger layout keeps the primary tubes close to the engine, making them a strong choice for street rods, classic trucks, off-road vehicles, engine swaps, and custom chassis applications.

Constructed from 16-gauge steel tubing, these headers use 1-5/8" primary tubes and 3" collectors to provide a strong balance of exhaust velocity, torque, and overall flow for Small Block Chevy engines ranging from 265 to 400 cubic inches. Sanderson's 3/8" patented flange design is built to seal directly against the cylinder head without traditional header gaskets, helping reduce leak points and simplify installation.

An optional professionally TIG-welded V-band upgrade is available for builders who want a cleaner, more serviceable collector connection with improved sealing and easier exhaust removal.

Why use block hugger headers on a Small Block Chevy?

Block hugger headers stay tight to the engine, creating additional clearance around narrow frame rails, steering components, suspension, and custom chassis structures. They are especially useful in swaps and street rod builds where conventional long-tube headers interfere with surrounding components.

Are 1-5/8" primary tubes a good choice for an SBC?

For most naturally aspirated street, trail, and performance Small Block Chevy combinations, 1-5/8" primaries provide a strong balance of exhaust velocity, low- and mid-range torque, and overall flow. Highly modified or very high-horsepower engines may require a different primary size based on the complete engine combination.

How does the gasketless flange design work?

Sanderson's thick 3/8" flange is designed to seal directly against the cylinder head without a conventional header gasket. Eliminating the gasket removes a common leak point, but the cylinder-head sealing surface must still be clean, flat, and in good condition.

What is the advantage of optional V-band collectors?

V-band connections provide a compact, serviceable exhaust joint that can be removed and reinstalled without traditional collector gaskets. They are especially useful in tight builds where access around the exhaust is limited.

Will these headers clear my steering and motor mounts?

The compact design is intended to clear many common steering shafts, tie rods, rack-and-pinion systems, motor mounts, starters, and transmissions. Final fitment still depends on engine position, frame design, mounts, steering geometry, and surrounding chassis components.

Should raw steel headers be coated?

Yes. Raw steel can rust when exposed to moisture, condensation, mud, road spray, and repeated heat cycles. Ceramic coating offers strong corrosion protection and heat management, while high-temperature paint provides a more economical finish.
