Yukon GM 8.5" & 8.6" Steel Spool - 30-Spline, 2.73 & Up
YUKYP FSGM8.5-30
The Yukon 30-Spline Steel Spool for GM 8.5" and 8.6" Rear Axles replaces the factory differential carrier to permanently lock both axle shafts together. Manufactured by Yukon Gear & Axle from heat-treated 8620 steel, this spool delivers equal torque to both rear wheels for drag racing, mud trucks, dedicated trail rigs, and other applications where maximum traction and mechanical simplicity matter.
Designed for 30-spline GM 8.5" and 8.6" rear axles with 2.73-and-up gear ratios, the spool eliminates differential action for consistent power delivery under load. Because these axles normally use C-clips for axle retention, a compatible C-clip eliminator system is required for installation.
Includes:
- (1) Yukon 30-Spline Steel Spool for GM 8.5" and 8.6" Rear Axles
Important: C-clip eliminators are required. This spool is intended for racing, off-road, and dedicated-use vehicles and is not recommended for normal street-driven applications.

Fitment Notes
- Fits compatible GM 8.5" and 8.6" rear axles with 30-spline axle shafts.
- Designed for 2.73 and numerically higher gear ratios.
- Requires a compatible C-clip eliminator conversion.
- Year, Make, and Model alone do not guarantee fitment because axle assemblies may have been changed or upgraded.
- Verify axle model, spline count, gear ratio, bearing dimensions, and axle-retention configuration before ordering.
Tech Insight
1. What does a full differential spool do?
A full spool replaces the differential carrier and mechanically locks both axle shafts together. Both rear wheels rotate at the same speed and receive equal torque at all times.
2. How is a spool different from a locker?
A locker can allow some differential action depending on its design and operating condition. A spool has no differential action at all, creating a permanent mechanical connection between both axle shafts.
3. Why are C-clip eliminators required?
GM 8.5" and 8.6" axles commonly retain the axle shafts with internal C-clips. Installing a spool removes the factory differential components that normally retain those clips, so an external axle-retention system is required.
4. Is this spool recommended for street driving?
No. Because both rear wheels remain locked together, the tires cannot rotate at different speeds while turning. This increases tire scrub, driveline stress, and low-speed handling effort, making the spool best suited to dedicated racing and off-road vehicles.
5. Will this spool fit any GM 8.5" or 8.6" rear axle?
No. The axle must use 30-spline shafts and a compatible 2.73-and-up gear ratio. Axle model, spline count, carrier dimensions, and C-clip eliminator compatibility should all be confirmed before installation.
