The Wide Open Design Universal Tilt Steering Column was developed for custom off-road vehicles, rock crawlers, buggies, race chassis, UTV-style builds, and other applications where steering position, strength, and serviceability matter. This column is built as a universal weld-in steering solution that allows the installer to set the steering wheel angle, column length, and in/out placement around the vehicle, driver position, dash layout, seat location, and steering system being used.
The steering column can be used as a standalone universal tilt steering column or paired with the included and easily mounted orbital valve mount for full hydraulic steering. The column tube can be shortened if needed, and the side tabs are unwelded to be fitted to the specific vehicle. Bronze bushings reduce long-term wear, while the adjustable gas shock clamp allows the tilt and feel to be dialed in for the final driving position.
Included Items
(1) WOD universal adjustable tilt steering column assembly with gas shock
(1) Weld-in orbital valve mount
Note: Weld ready side mounting tabs for custom fitment
Specifications
Universal weld-in tilt steering column
Designed for off-road, rock crawler, buggy, race chassis, and custom vehicle use
Can be used with or without the orbital valve mount
Included mount allows the orbital valve to be tied directly into the tilt column assembly
Adjustable gas shock clamp allows tilt position tuning
Bronze bushings at pivot points for improved wear resistance
Column tube can be shortened for custom placement
Main steering shaft can be shortened during installation
Side tabs are unwelded for application-specific fitment
Built for custom fabrication and weld-in installation
Designed to help position the steering wheel correctly for driver comfort and vehicle packaging
Fitment
Universal fit for custom vehicle applications
Ideal for rock crawlers, rock bouncers, trail rigs, off-road race cars, tube chassis builds, race cars, drag race cars, street cars, drift cars, show cars and custom projects
Can be used as a standard tilt column in non-orbital applications
Can be configured with an optional orbital valve mount for full hydraulic steering systems
Installer must cut, fit, drill, bolt, and weld components as required for the specific vehicle
Final column location, steering shaft length, orbital valve location, and mounting tab placement are determined during installation
Installation Notes
Shorten the column tube and main shaft as needed to set the steering wheel in/out location.
Locate the side tabs where they best fit the vehicle, then weld them to the shaft/column assembly after final placement is confirmed.
When using the orbital valve mount, install and mock up the orbital valve before final welding.
Drill a 1/4" hole through the U-joint and column connection, then secure with a 1/4" bolt and lock nut.
Cycle the column through its full tilt range before final welding to confirm the U-joint rotates freely with no binding.
Remove the orbital valve before welding the orbital mount plate into place.
Allow welded components to cool before reinstalling the orbital valve.
