The Winters SideWinder Gated Shifter for Torqueflite 904 and 999 Transmissions provides positive, repeatable gear selection for Jeeps, off-road buggies, race vehicles, street rods, and custom builds using Chrysler Torqueflite 904 or 999 automatic transmissions. Instead of relying on spring-loaded lockout levers, the SideWinder uses a stepped steel gate and mechanical guard system to guide the shift handle through each transmission position.

The reverse position is protected by an offset section of the gate that requires a deliberate movement before the handle can enter reverse, helping prevent accidental gear selection during aggressive driving. Each shifter arrives fully assembled in its own console and includes a 5-foot cable and linkage hardware for a straightforward custom installation.

Includes:

  • (1) Fully Assembled Winters SideWinder Torqueflite 904/999 Standard-Pattern Shifter
  • (1) 5-Foot Shifter Cable
  • Shift Linkage Hardware
  • Integrated Steel Safety Gate and Guard

Fitment

Fits:

  • Chrysler Torqueflite 904 automatic transmissions
  • Chrysler Torqueflite 999 automatic transmissions
  • TF-6 transmission applications using a standard automatic shift pattern

Common Applications:

  • Jeep builds
  • Rock crawlers
  • Off-road buggies
  • Race vehicles
  • Street rods
  • Custom tube chassis vehicles

Installation Notes:

  • Confirm the transmission valve-body shift pattern before ordering.
  • This listing is configured for a standard automatic shift pattern.
  • A reverse-manual valve body requires the corresponding reverse-pattern gate.
  • Verify the included 5-foot cable is long enough for the planned routing.
  • Set both the transmission and shifter in Neutral before adjusting the cable.
  • Check full engagement in Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Second, and First before operating the vehicle.
  • Keep the cable away from exhaust heat, sharp bends, and moving suspension components.
  • Custom mounting may be required in fabricated consoles and tube chassis applications.

For custom installations, the Wide Open Design No-Console Winters Shifter Mount provides a rigid, pre-drilled mounting foundation for the SideWinder housing.

Tech Insight

How does the SideWinder gated mechanism work?

The stepped steel gate physically guides the shift handle through each transmission position. Defined stops separate the gears and help the driver make deliberate, repeatable shifts without relying on spring-loaded lockout levers.

How does the reverse safety gate work?

Reverse is located behind an offset section of the gate. The operator must intentionally move the shift handle through that offset before entering reverse, helping prevent a direct shift from a forward range into reverse.

Do I need a standard or reverse-pattern gate?

The correct gate depends on the valve body installed in the transmission. A conventional automatic Torqueflite 904 or 999 requires a standard-pattern gate, while a transmission equipped with a reverse-manual valve body requires the matching reverse-pattern gate.

Is the included 5-foot cable long enough?

The included cable works for many front-engine vehicles, Jeeps, and compact custom builds. Rear-engine layouts, stretched chassis, or installations requiring complex routing may require a longer cable.

Can the SideWinder be mounted at an angle?

Yes. Because the shifter operates through a flexible cable rather than rigid linkage, it can be positioned to suit many custom cockpit layouts. The mount must remain rigid enough to prevent movement during aggressive shifts.

How should the shifter cable be adjusted?

Place both the transmission selector and the shifter in Neutral before connecting and adjusting the cable. After adjustment, verify that every shifter position fully engages the corresponding transmission detent without placing the cable or linkage under tension.
