The Winters SideWinder Lockout Shifter for Ford C6 Transmissions gives builders positive mechanical gear selection with an added reverse lockout for racing, rock crawling, mud trucks, and high-horsepower off-road builds. The SideWinder uses a stepped steel gate to physically guide the shift handle through each transmission position instead of relying on spring-loaded shift mechanisms.

The lockout design adds another level of protection between the forward gears and Reverse. The driver must intentionally operate the lockout and move the shifter through the correct gate before Reverse can be selected, helping prevent an accidental shift into Reverse during aggressive driving or competition use. The lockout configuration also includes a neutral safety switch that can be incorporated into the vehicle's starting circuit.

Available Shift Patterns:

  • Standard Pattern: For Ford C6 transmissions using a conventional automatic shift pattern.
  • Reverse Pattern: For Ford C6 transmissions equipped with the corresponding reverse-pattern or reverse-manual valve body.

Includes:

  • (1) Fully Assembled Winters SideWinder Ford C6 Lockout Shifter
  • (1) 5-Foot, 3-Inch Travel Push-Pull Shifter Cable
  • Ford C6 Shift Linkage Hardware
  • Mechanical Reverse Lockout
  • Neutral Safety Switch
  • Winters Shifter Console

Competition Note: Reverse lockouts and neutral safety switches are commonly required in racing applications, but requirements vary by organization and class. Always verify the current rulebook for your specific racing organization before finalizing the vehicle.

  • Ford C6 automatic transmissions
  • Rock crawlers and rock bouncers
  • Ultra4 and off-road race vehicles
  • Mud trucks
  • Drag and performance builds
  • High-horsepower custom vehicles

Installation Notes:

  • Select the shifter gate that matches the actual shift pattern of your C6 transmission.
  • Verify the included 5-foot cable provides enough length for the planned routing.
  • Keep the cable away from headers, exhaust heat, sharp bends, and moving drivetrain or suspension components.
  • Set both the transmission and shifter in Neutral when making final cable adjustments.
  • Verify full engagement in Park, Reverse, Neutral, and every forward range before operating the vehicle.
  • The neutral safety switch must be properly wired into the vehicle's starting circuit to provide starting protection.

For fabricated consoles and tube chassis installations, the Wide Open Design Winters Shifter Mounting Brackets provide a rigid, pre-drilled mounting point for the SideWinder housing.

FAQ

What is the difference between a standard SideWinder and a lockout SideWinder?

The lockout version adds a mechanical mechanism that requires an intentional action before the shifter can be moved into Reverse. This provides additional protection against accidentally selecting Reverse during aggressive driving or competition use.

Do I need a Standard or Reverse Pattern shifter for my Ford C6?

The shifter gate needs to match the valve body and actual shift sequence of your C6. A conventional automatic C6 uses the Standard Pattern, while a C6 equipped with the corresponding reverse-pattern or reverse-manual valve body requires the Reverse Pattern.

Does a Reverse Pattern shifter convert my C6 to reverse pattern?

No. The shifter gate only determines the path the SideWinder handle follows. It does not change the internal operation of the transmission. A Reverse Pattern gate should only be used with a C6 already configured for the matching shift sequence.

What does the neutral safety switch do?

The neutral safety switch provides a circuit that can be incorporated into the vehicle's starting system to prevent the engine from being started in an unsafe gear position. The switch must be properly wired during installation for this function to work.

Is the included 5-foot cable long enough?

Five feet works for many conventional front-engine installations. Custom tube chassis, unusual cockpit layouts, or builds requiring the cable to route around headers and drivetrain components may require a different cable length.

How should I adjust the Ford C6 shifter cable?

Start with both the SideWinder and the transmission selector in Neutral. Adjust the cable at the transmission linkage, then cycle through every shifter position and verify that the C6 fully reaches each corresponding transmission detent without binding or loading the cable.

Does the lockout shifter automatically make my vehicle legal for racing?

No. Safety requirements vary by racing organization, class, and vehicle. Always check the current rulebook for your specific class before assuming the shifter or lockout configuration meets competition requirements.
