The Winters Ford E4OD & 4R100 SideWinder Gated Shifter provides positive, repeatable gear selection for trucks, off-road vehicles, race builds, and custom projects using Ford E4OD or 4R100 automatic transmissions. Instead of relying on spring-loaded lockout levers, the SideWinder uses a stepped steel gate and mechanical guard system to physically guide the shift handle through each transmission position.

The E4OD and 4R100 are heavy-duty, electronically controlled four-speed overdrive transmissions commonly found behind high-torque Ford gas and diesel engines. The SideWinder provides the mechanical gear-selection side of the system, giving the driver defined shifter positions while the transmission's electronic controls continue to manage transmission operation. An offset section of the gate requires deliberate movement before the shifter can enter Reverse. Each shifter arrives fully assembled in its own console and includes a 5-foot cable and E4OD / 4R100 shift linkage hardware for installation.

  • Race Trucks
  • Custom 4x4 Builds
  • Custom Tube Chassis Vehicles

Installation Notes:

  • Confirm your transmission is an E4OD or 4R100 before ordering.
  • The SideWinder mechanically selects the transmission range; it does not replace the electronic transmission controller.
  • Electronic transmission controls must remain properly configured for the E4OD or 4R100 to operate correctly.
  • Verify the included 5-foot cable is long enough for the planned routing.
  • Set both the transmission selector and SideWinder shifter in Neutral before final cable adjustment.
  • After adjustment, verify the shifter fully reaches every transmission position without cable bind or excessive tension.
  • Keep the cable away from exhaust heat, sharp bends, driveshafts, and moving suspension components.
  • Custom mounting may be required in fabricated consoles and tube chassis applications.

For custom installations, the Wide Open Design Winters Shifter Mounting Brackets provide a rigid, pre-drilled mounting foundation for the SideWinder housing.

FAQ

Why use a Winters SideWinder with an E4OD or 4R100?

The E4OD and 4R100 are heavy-duty Ford automatic transmissions commonly used in trucks and high-torque builds. The SideWinder gives the driver a simple, positive mechanical way to select Park, Reverse, Neutral, and the forward ranges while allowing the transmission's electronic controls to continue managing transmission operation.

Does the SideWinder eliminate the E4OD or 4R100 transmission controller?

No. The SideWinder controls the mechanical shift selector through the shifter cable and transmission linkage. The E4OD and 4R100 still require the appropriate electronic controls to operate the transmission's electronically controlled functions.

What is the difference between the E4OD and 4R100?

The 4R100 is a later evolution of Ford's E4OD heavy-duty four-speed automatic. Although the transmissions are related and this SideWinder application supports both, builders should still identify which transmission they have when planning the rest of the drivetrain and electronic controls.

What does the SideWinder gated shift mechanism do?

The stepped steel gate physically guides the shift handle through each transmission position. Defined positions help the driver make deliberate, repeatable gear selections without relying on a spring-loaded lockout lever.

How does the Reverse safety gate work?

Reverse is positioned behind an offset section of the gate. The driver must intentionally move the shift handle through that offset before entering Reverse, helping prevent an accidental direct shift from a forward range into Reverse.

Is the included 5-foot cable long enough?

The included 5-foot cable works for many conventional front-engine installations. Longer cables may be needed in stretched trucks, custom chassis, or builds where the cable must take a longer route around exhaust, drivetrain, or suspension components.

Can I mount the SideWinder at an angle?

Yes. Because the SideWinder operates through a flexible push-pull cable rather than rigid linkage between the shifter and transmission, it can be positioned to work with many custom cockpit layouts. The shifter housing should be mounted securely so it cannot move during gear changes.

How should I adjust the E4OD / 4R100 shifter cable?

Place both the transmission selector and SideWinder shifter in Neutral before making the final cable adjustment. Once adjusted, move the shifter through its entire range and verify that every position fully engages the corresponding transmission detent without binding or placing unnecessary tension on the cable.
