Crane Axle’s GM 14-Bolt Billet Spindles are built for custom axle builders who need a stronger billet replacement for factory cast 14-bolt spindles. Precision machined in-house from solid 4140 billet steel, these spindles are designed to work with standard smooth and metric ribbed GM 14-Bolt housings as well as custom fabricated axle housings using up to a 3" I.D. bore. They retain OE-style 14-Bolt wheel bearings and seals, making replacement parts easy to source and keeping serviceability straightforward both in the shop and on the trail.

The 30-spline designation can be misleading if you are comparing it to smaller axle platforms. A traditional GM 14-Bolt 30-spline axle shaft is approximately 1.550" in diameter, making it larger in shaft diameter than the popular 1.500" 35-spline axle used in many aftermarket axle systems. In other words, spline count alone does not determine shaft size or strength. The 14-Bolt 30-spline platform was designed around a substantial axle shaft and remains a strong choice for serious off-road builds.

FAQ

Is a 30-spline GM 14-Bolt axle shaft smaller than a 35-spline axle shaft?

No. Spline count alone does not determine axle shaft size. A GM 14-bolt 30-spline axle shaft measures approximately 1.550" in diameter, while the common aftermarket 35-spline shaft is approximately 1.500". The 14-bolt uses a much larger 30-spline architecture than many other axle platforms, which is why comparing spline count alone can be misleading.

Why would I choose a 30-spline 14-Bolt instead of converting to 35 spline?

For many builds, there is no need to move away from the 30-spline 14-Bolt simply because another axle uses more splines. The factory-style 1.550" 30-spline shaft already provides a large axle shaft diameter and is well suited for high-horsepower, large-tire, and severe off-road applications.

The right choice should be based on the complete axle system, shaft diameter, material, differential, housing, and intended use rather than spline count alone.

Will a 1.500" 35-spline axle shaft fit through these spindles?

Yes. The GM 14-Bolt 30-spline spindle has enough internal clearance for the commonly used 1.500" diameter 35-spline axle shaft. This gives custom axle builders flexibility when designing a housing around different differential and axle shaft combinations.

Differential spline compatibility and the rest of the axle package still need to match the axle shafts being used.

What is the advantage of a billet spindle over a factory 14-Bolt spindle?

Factory GM 14-Bolt spindles were designed as production components and can vary in condition and dimensional consistency, especially after decades of use. Crane Axle spindles are individually machined from solid 4140 billet steel to provide a consistent spindle for new fabricated axle builds and high-abuse applications.

This is especially useful when building an axle from scratch rather than modifying or reusing an original housing.

Can these spindles be used with a fabricated axle housing?

Yes. These spindles are designed for both GM 14-Bolt housings and custom fabricated axle housings. They feature a 3.00" outer diameter and can be used with housings or axle tubing with up to a 3.00" I.D. bore.

They are commonly used with 4.00" x .500" wall axle tubing.

Are these spindles intended for steering 14-Bolt builds?

Yes. They are well suited for custom steering axle conversions, fabricated front or rear axle housings, and other applications where a builder needs a strong 14-Bolt spindle foundation. Final compatibility will depend on the knuckle, hub, axle shaft, differential, and housing configuration being used.
