The Wide Open Design GM HydroBoost Brake Kit delivers the braking force needed for serious off-road vehicles where traditional vacuum boosters simply can't keep up. Designed for rock crawlers, Ultra4 race cars, tube chassis builds, and LS-powered swaps, this hydraulic brake assist system uses power steering pressure instead of engine vacuum to provide powerful, consistent brake assist—even with aggressive camshafts, large tires, and full hydraulic steering.

Each HydroBoost unit is modified in-house with optimized internal flow and -8 AN ports for improved plumbing, increased reliability, and easier installation. Combined with a 1-1/8" bore master cylinder, fabricated pedal assembly, and weld-on mounting system, this kit provides a complete braking solution capable of controlling heavy rigs equipped with one-ton axles, portal axles, and 40"+ tires.

Includes:

  • Modified GM HydroBoost Unit
  • 1-1/8" Bore GM Master Cylinder
  • Brake Line Fittings
  • Fabricated Adjustable Pedal Assembly
  • Universal Weld-On Tube Mounts

FAQ

Why choose HydroBoost instead of a vacuum booster?

HydroBoost uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump rather than engine vacuum. This provides consistent brake assist regardless of engine vacuum, making it ideal for LS engines with aggressive camshafts, forced induction, or low idle vacuum.

Is HydroBoost better for large tires?

Yes. Vehicles equipped with 40-inch and larger tires require substantially more braking force than factory systems were designed to provide. HydroBoost significantly increases brake assist, reducing pedal effort while improving braking confidence.

Will HydroBoost work with full hydraulic steering?

Absolutely. HydroBoost is commonly paired with hydro-assist and full hydraulic steering systems. Proper pump sizing, reservoir capacity, hose sizing, and steering system tuning are important to maintain both steering and brake performance.

Why does WOD modify the HydroBoost unit?

Our HydroBoost units are modified in-house with -8 AN fittings and optimized internal flow. This simplifies plumbing, improves serviceability, and creates a cleaner installation compared to adapting factory metric fittings.

What power steering pump should I use?

For demanding off-road applications, we recommend pairing this system with a properly sized PSC high-flow steering pump and remote reservoir. Adequate flow and reservoir capacity help maintain both steering and brake performance during extended low-speed crawling.

Can I run HydroBoost on a trail-only buggy?

Yes. HydroBoost is one of the most common brake systems used on modern rock crawlers, Ultra4 cars, competition buggies, and custom off-road builds because it delivers powerful, repeatable braking even under the harshest operating conditions.
