The Wide Open Design GM 14-Bolt Pinion Tie-In with Pinion Guard reinforces and protects one of the most vulnerable areas of a GM 14-Bolt axle. Manufactured by Wide Open Design from 3/8" and 1/4" steel plate, this weld-together kit connects the pinion area to the axle truss, creating a more rigid structure while shielding the yoke, U-joint, and pinion support from rocks, ledges, and trail impacts.

The 3/8" pinion guard is drilled and tapped to simplify installation and service without requiring separate backing nuts. Its contoured design provides clearance for 1350, 1410, and 1480 yokes, making it a strong choice for rock bouncers, crawlers, Ultra4 cars, and heavy-duty trail rigs using a Wide Open Design 14-Bolt truss.

Includes:

  • (1) Wide Open Design Pinion Tie-In
  • (1) 3/8" Steel Pinion Guard
  • (9) Mounting Bolts

Tech Insight

What does the pinion tie-in do?

The tie-in connects the pinion support area to the axle truss, allowing impact and drivetrain loads to be distributed through a larger portion of the housing instead of being concentrated at the pinion nose.

Why is the pinion area vulnerable off-road?

The yoke, U-joint, and pinion support often sit low and forward on the axle housing, leaving them exposed to rocks, ledges, and hard landings. A direct hit can damage the yoke, driveshaft, pinion bearings, or housing.

What is the benefit of a drilled and tapped guard?

The tapped 3/8" back plate allows the bolts to thread directly into the guard. This eliminates loose nuts behind the assembly, simplifies removal, and makes trail-side or shop service easier.

Will this guard clear a 1480 yoke?

Yes. The guard is designed to provide clearance for 1350, 1410, and 1480 yokes. Final driveshaft angle and operating clearance should still be checked throughout the full suspension cycle.

Why tie the guard into the truss instead of mounting it only near the pinion?

A guard mounted only at the pinion can transfer impact directly into the pinion support. Tying the guard into the truss creates a stronger load path that helps spread impact forces across the reinforced axle structure.
